23 Apr April Wines of the Month are Here!
Get ’em while they’re hot! Two gorgeous Italian classics from small grower/winemakers, both named for their unique vineyards:
2011 Nada Giuseppe Barbaresco “Casot” D.O.C.G.
Casot, the vineyard in the Barbaresco D.O.C.G. from which this wine hails, is one of the oldest in the area and produces some of the most prized Nebbiolo grapes. The wine is barrelled in three different sizes of oak casks for two years, after which the casks are blended to create the finished wine. It is beautifully approachable, especially after a brief decanting, and will age well for at least the next ten years. Notes of violet and rose are dominant on the nose above a full-bodied and elegantly structured texture. Pair with any red meat, wild fowl, hard and aged cheeses, and burgers from the grill.
2013 Fattoria San Lorenzo “Le Oche” Verdicchio
Winemaker and grower Natalino Crognaletti’s “Le Oche” is named for the geese that eat the weeds and grass between the rows of grapes in his family’s vineyard. This Verdicchio, like all of Fattoria San Lorenzo’s wines, are biodynamically farmed and certified organic. The rich texture and riesling-like oiliness of verdicchio are all just the grape with absolutely no oak. It features notes of marzipan and candied lemon peel with a harmonizing structure of acid and salinity. Pair with fish or meat proteins (particularly Marche-style Italian pork/sausage dishes featuring fennel and orange), sheep milk cheeses, and hearty grain salads of quinoa, bulgur, and the like.
